I just wanted to report that I did get the HP LaserJet 1018 to work with my new iMac (20' with OS X10.5.6) I followed Kurt Lang's suggestions, but must have made a mistake, as it didn't work the first time. The HP LaserJet 1018 is currently not supported by HP on any version of OS X or macOS. Only Linux and Windows driver support is shown. This is also confirmed by reviewing the contents of the HP Printer Drivers v5.1 for OS X that was released on 2017-10-24. The only way that you can use this printer with High Sierra is to host it on a Linux or Windows machine as a network device. 2. Ensure the printer is powered on and the USB is directly connected to your Mac.
3. Click the Apple icon, select System Preferences and then go to Printers & Scanners.
4. click the plus sign and select the listed 1018 printer.
5. Click the Use drop-down menu and then click on Select Printer Software.
6. Type 1022 in the search box and select the HP Laserjet 1022 driver.
7. Click OK and confirm any dialog, then try printing using the created print queue.

The HP LaserJet 1018 is currently not supported by HP on any version of OS X or macOS. Only Linux and Windows driver support is shown. This is also confirmed by reviewing the contents of the HP Printer Drivers v5.1 for OS X that was released on 2017-10-24.

There is Foomatic driver support for the HP LaserJet 1018 on Linux. You will have to obtain their driver code, compile it, and load their firmware into the printer. There is no GutenPrint support for this printer. HP also supports this printer on Linux with their HP Linux and Imaging software.
